Seminars held

Speaker: Peter Brinkmann, University of Illinois
Title: Computational Aspects of Surface Homeomorphisms
Where: Room 107, Richard Berry Building, The University of Melbourne
When: 3:15pm, Wednesday, 18th September (2002)

I will talk about XTrain, a software package for computer experiments with surface homeomorphisms, as well as some of the work that was motivated or supported by experiments with XTrain.

Speaker: Professor Morwen Thistlethwaite, University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Title: Computational Methods in Knot Theory
Where: Theatre A, Richard Berry Building, The University of Melbourne
When: 11:00am, Thursday, 30th January (2003)

The task of enumerating and classifying links constitutes a good apprenticeship in knot theory. Various techniques and invariants are presented, and their relative strengths discussed.
